CHAMPLAIN CANAL TO WHITEHALL

Only about 20 miles took 4 hours with speed limits and 4 locks -- two locking up, two locking down.  We are getting close to Champlain, one more lock which we can see from our dock.

We passed more barges and tugs and dredges -- GE is paying 2 or 3 billion to dredge up pcb's, I wonder where they're putting them.  Later I found out -- the pcb's are going to Texas for some kind in infinite storage, I guess.

We passed the famous Tug 44 and Fred's new dock, didn't stop in.

Whitehall was once a beautiful river town, now its a decaying shell of itself, really sad.  Our first small navy was built here; the remains of the Warship Ticonderoga are here; theres a nice museum and a beautiful new building the Canal Corp built (looks like no one uses it).  Theres some beautiful architecture left but decaying. The downtown really needs help.

Tug 44 is famous in the New York Canal System, from Buffalo to Manhattan

Everyone likes this victorian home , up on a hill overlooking the river; it's a Whitehall landmark, the Skene mansion, and is being restored by a local group

Too bad a town with so much history is dying at its core.

What,s left if Ticondaroga is in this shed

Nice little riverfront park.
